Why prefer magnesium die casting?
Stiffness in these alloys is remarkable and strength to weight ratio is extremely useful in many sectors.
- Has the capacity to bear temperature fluctuations.
- Magnesium die casting is highly cost effective.
- The walls can be made exceptionally thin.
- Recycling is possible.
- Corrosion resistance is offered.
- Magnesium die casting is highly desirable as it is the lightest metal alloy.
- Optimum stability is seen with good dimensional accuracy.
- Both thermal and electrical conductivity can be achieved.
- EMI and RFI shielding properties are admirable.
- The finishing offered is very attractive.
We will help to design the component of your choice with maximum durability and within the budget! High temperature can be borne by these metal alloys and you will be highly impressed by the finished product we offer.
THIXOMOLDING
Advantages of Thixomolding vs Die-Casting
Lower Porosity
- 0% - 2 % Porosity for Thixomolding.
- 2 - 5 % Porosity for Die Casting.
- Pressure Tight Components.
- Superior EMI/RFI Shielding.
- Hermetic Sealing.
- Is due to lack of gas entrapment and excellent packing pressure.
Closer Tolerances
- With Precision Tooling Adjustments, Linear → +/- 0.0008 in/in
- No Draft Features Are Possible.
- Net Shape and Near Net Shape Parts.
- Eliminate Machining.
- Are a result of better & more consistent flow (lack of dendrites & oxide skins), and higher, consistent packing pressure, among other factors.
Thinner Walls
- 0.035” Walls are Routine.
- Vs. 0.070” Walls in Die Casting.
- Lighter Parts.
Longer Tool Life
- Many tools have a tool life of > 500,000 shots.
- Lower long term tooling replacement costs.
- This is due to the fact that magnesium is easy on tools to begin with (low reactivity with Fe), and the metal temperature is 1100 °F (vs. > 1250°F for die casting) = less heat checking.
Other Advantages
- Increased Complexity & More Delicate Features.
- Better Cosmetics.
- Environmentally Friendly.
Thixomolding Process
Thixomolding is an environmentally friendly, high speed, net shape, semi-solid Magnesium injection molding process.
In a single step, the process transforms room temperature Magnesium chips into molded parts with a high degree of complexity and dimensional precision. Thixomolding is very similar to plastic injection molding in machinery, tooling and process fundamentals. Designers with experience in plastic injection part design will find themselves very familiar with designing Thixomolded products.
Shown below is a schematic of a basic Thixomolding molding machine along with a typical JSW 450 Metric Ton molding press.
